Oh Joy! Budget was on 22nd April....
(Beer Tax goes up AGAIN; that’s 20% UP since 2008)
With SIX pubs closing EVERY day it came as small relief when publicans read the headlines about the Chancellor’s cut in VAT...until in the small print it was revealed that we’d been singled out and beer DUTY was to go up at the same time! Pubs, brewers, CAMRA and many MPs have come together to launch a new campaign:-
Axe The Beer Tax
• 3272 pubs have closed since the 2008 Budget (and rising; this was as of 01/10/2009)
• Taxes are up to a third of the cost of your pint
• Beer Duty has increased by 17% this year
• Duty is set to increase above inflation for the next 4 YEARS
• Beer consumption in pubs has slumped to the lowest level since the 1930s (remember that when you read all those stories about binge drinking! Alcohol that’s cheaper than water in supermarkets has much to answer for there.)
• When VAT was cut beer duty was increased but it will not reduce when VAT goes back up at the end of this year
Despite the real evidence that the Treasury is getting LESS REVENUE by putting up
beer tax (more people drink at home so less VAT from the cheap tinnies from the supermarket,
plus less business tax as pubs close down) Darling has increased it again. However,
