Beer with Food

Why always wine with food? Cask ale has as wide a spectrum flavours.

Rules of thumb

Lighter ABV beers with lighter foods

Amber Best Bitters are great all-rounders

Blonde/Golden, hoppy ales with richer/creamy sauces

Dark Milds with light chocolate dishes

Porters with cheese or rich choc dishes

Barley Wines/Strong ales w/strong cheese

Try with

Dawkins Green Barrel Best 4.0%

Gently malty organic ale with great balance and good bitter finish

Try with

Bangers & Mash

The Green Man

“Food with Beer”

Co-Landlord and Chef Kris often uses our real ales in his recipes. Here are some examples to demonstrate how versatile Cask Ale can be.

Friday’s Fish & Chips

Crisp ale like Dawkins Green Barrel makes an excellent, light and crisp beer batter to coat and preserve the flavours of the sustainable fish we use.

[Or, you could just use a keg ‘Smooth’ instead of vinegar on yer chips! Ed]

Sunday’s Roast

Beef Gravy

A full-flavoured ale adds richness and a silky flavour plus an attractive glossy sheen to the Sunday Roast gravy.

For example, recently he used Butts Blackguard Porter in the gravy which went so well with the venison from Sheepdrove Farm Organic butchers.

The Portcullis

Matthews Brassknocker 3.8%

Try with

Veggie Thai Curry

The sweet lemon grass notes of the Brassknocker only add to those in the curry.  With each move from one to the other, the flavours intensify.

Dawkins Green Barrel Best 4.0%

Try with

Sausages & Mash

The natural heaviness of the mash is wiped clean by the intense bitterness and savoury apects of the GB.

With a grassy hint to the beer, this makes the ultimate food and beer combo.

Cheddar Potholer 4.3%

Try with

Baltomire Scott Steak Sandwich

Despite having almost opposite flavours, we have found that a potty and a steak sarnie go together very well.  The zesty apricot flavours of the potholer curl around the tongue, only to be converted into a more bitter and malty flavour when eating the burger.   In turn the burger increases its meatiness as the beer goes down.
